[PREVIEW_TEXT] => Traditionally, the key factor in the selection of a logistics provider is the price, and the second priority is the time of delivery. However, when it comes to choosing a carrier of pharmaceutical products, it is crucial to have guarantees of the safety of the cargo properties during transportation.
Oleg Baykov, Deputy General Director of Biocard Logistics, talks about how Biocard Logistics develops services and improves technologies for providing qualitative delivery and storage of thermolabile cargoes.
A PROBLEM THAT REQUIRES AN IMMEDIATE DECISION
In 2019, the volume of the global pharmaceutical logistics market amounted to $ 69 billion and is projected to grow with an average annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.3% from 2020 to 2027. The short-term impact of COVID-19 on the market has become a critical factor for the rapid growth of pharmaceutical logistics worldwide. In the context of a pandemic, Governments around the world are paying special attention to healthcare organizations and providing patients with a sufficient amount of medicines. Thus, the sales of conventional medicines are increasing in every country. The value of the global pharmaceutical market is $76.4 billion. Due to temperature failures during transportation, individuals in charge of making decisions in logistics regularly report damage to a third of all delivered products. If we consider pharmaceuticals that require "cold chain» logistics, where the highest risk is associated with exceeding temperature limits, this means that products worth from $110 billion to $300 million per day are at risk! This is a huge number of medicines that potentially do not reach their recipients on time or do not reach them at all. Solving this challenge will bring significant benefits to the pharmaceutical business.
Due to the deterioration of the epidemiological situation in the world, a large number of very valuable and temperature-sensitive biopharmaceuticals will enter the market shortly. This also means that the cost of shipping temperature-sensitive goods will increase along with the increase in the cost of medicines. And, of course, the total losses caused by temperature failures during transportation amount to more than the cost of a pallet or a container with a drug.
In addition, in the logistics of pharmaceuticals, we are dealing with products that are of critical importance for patients: life and death. Therefore, any transportation ultimately creates waiting time, additional costs, and even possible physical harm and discomfort for a patient who must take this medicine. Therefore, safety and high quality are of paramount importance in pharmaceutical logistics. And since the assessment of processes is impossible without key performance indicators, an effective way to control compliance with the "cold chain» is necessary. One of the ways to achieve this is to introduce a comprehensive Temperature Monitoring System into the process.
DEVELOPMENT OF PROPRIETARY TECHNOLOGIES
In 1989, Biocard Logistics specialized only in the logistics for clinical studies. Gradually, the volume of the shipments increased, the logistics provider developed at an accelerated pace, expanding the range of services for customers, accumulating "best practices" and professionalism in the delivery and storage of medical products. Today, biocard logistics is a full-service logistics company with 30 years of experience, a reliable partner for leading pharmaceutical and healthcare organizations not only in russia but also globally. Since the pharmaceutical market is the largest, requiring specialized logistics services and storage of temperature-sensitive cargoes, competition is very high. Every year, the requirements for logistics providers are increasing.
Compliance with the requirements of the "cold chain» during the storage and transportation of medicines is one of the priorities in ensuring the safety of vaccination of the population. According to statistics, about a third of the pharmaceutical products of the "cold chain» are at risk every year and do not reach their destination due to temperature failures. To solve this challenge, market participants are developing various technologies. The lack of a suitable vaccine against covid-19 increases the burden on the health of the population in the world. Researchers and clinicians around the world are experimenting with drugs to find a cure for covid-19.
Biocard Logistics goes with the times, responding to new challenges, and in line with the growing demand of the market in studies, manufacturing, and launching preventive and therapeutic medicines. The introduction of process automation allows biocard to improve the efficiency and safety of cargo carriage. In addition, the implementation and development of temperature control solutions in refrigerators and containers make it possible to remotely monitor the temperature in real-time during the transportation of temperature-sensitive medicines and vaccines. The use of the iot system allows to predict the possible risks of temperature failures along the routes and eliminates temperature instability.
The global digitalization trend is also a driver for the development and implementation of proprietary technologies. The development of own erp system, online services for couriers and customers are just the first steps in the automation of business processes. Priority is given to solutions aimed at accelerating cargo delivery, processes control, and integration into a single digital platform.
Biocard logistics continuously invests in new technologies, improving customer service, increasing the convenience and quality of delivery and other services. When transporting thermolabile goods, the ability to monitor and track the movement of goods in real-time is of critical importance. We apply a technological approached to implement these opportunities, so in september 2019 we started developing our e-platforms for couriers and customers. The mobile application for biocard mobile customers is a specially designed software that helps our customers control the delivery process and simplifies operations. Direct control of all stages and processes gives confidence in the timely delivery of cargoes and the preservation of the properties and quality of pharmaceutical cargoes. Auto-push notifications in the mobile app, showing every change in the cargo status, increase the transparency and traceability of the supply chain and directly contribute to customer satisfaction with the range of services. In the mobile application, you can make a delivery request, download copies of documents, scroll through the order history and documents for all orders. Within 3 months after the launch of the mobile application, it showed excellent performance. Today, more than 800 customers use the biocard mobile app.
For couriers, we have developed a personal account on the website that facilitates distributing orders and plans effective delivery routes, as well as makes the delivery for couriers much easier.
One of the key indicators of the quality of our work is in-time execution and no temperature failures. Every year we exceed planned indicators values, striving for perfection of services for our clients.
A SAFEPACK ECOSYSTEM. SMART INSULATED CONTAINERS AND SMART SENSORS
We have launched the project of the unified Safepack ecosystem and the development of smart insulated containers that preserve the temperature regimes for up to 240 hours. After conducting a series of tests of insulated containers, the thermal sensors showed 100% temperature stability. Now we have expanded the range of insulated containers to 17 models, offering variety in volume, weight, and manufacturing materials.
The development of insulated containers prompted the development of our own temperature-sensitive element, which will be integrated into the insulated containers. Using this technology our clients will be able to track the entire delivery process in real-time and check location and cargo temperature in transit. Our clients have full access to all possible parameters: location control, temperature, container opening, batteries status, vibration, movement, impact, cargo fall. The smart sensor measures not only the inside temperature in the container but also the ambient temperature. This makes it possible for our clients to be completely confident in the safety of their cargoes. Taking into account the continuous growth of the “cold chain» cargoes delivery volumes, we relied on all processes automation and human factor mitigation. The automatic temperature control solution ensures quality and safety, as well as increases the efficiency of handling by reducing manual work. This technology allows reducing the number of temperature failures, avoiding the delivery of substitute products, also contributes to conducting a more environmentally sustainable business. With the integration of the Smart Sensor and the Biocard Mobile application, we completely automated orders delivery excluding physical monitoring.
SPECIAL ASPECTS OF DELIVERY OF MEDICAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL GOODS
Today, 80% of the shipments handled by Biocard Logistics are medical and pharmaceutical goods – vaccines, medicines, biomaterials, etc. When organizing delivery for our clients, we take into account many factors that are important for a client: time, weight and dimensions of goods, the required temperature regime, the capacity of insulated containers, the compatibility of goods, and so on. All these requirements are individual and need a custom-tailored approach. Taking into account a huge amount of information necessary for the customer and by testing hypotheses, we create high-quality service. The key goal of the proprietary developments is to expand global presence, provide high-quality services, streamline the process of interaction with our customers. To automate the processing, we have developed an ITIL system based on 1C – a system for managing incoming orders. It allowed us to improve the work of employees responsible for processing orders and to regulate smoothly the flow of incoming orders in real-time.
INNOVATIONS IN OUR SERVICES
By the well-coordinated work of our team, we were able to quickly launch innovations and obtain the improvements. Now we have significantly increased operations in all areas and perform services using our proprietary technological developments. The speed of orders handling has increased by 30%. We strive to create a seamless experience for our customers, and we continue to work on improving and scaling the service quality. Biocard completely changes the approach to logistics.
